Exemplary School

Bethalto, IL — October 31. 2025— Civic Memorial High School is proud to announce that it has been officially recognized as an Exemplary School of Excellence, the highest designation awarded by the Illinois State Board of Education. This honor places CMHS among the top-performing high schools in the state as reported by the Illinois State Report Card, reflecting a culture of high expectations, student growth, and strong community partnerships. This designation is a first in our school’s history!

Civic Memorial’s achievement highlights the dedication of its students, teachers, staff, families, and community partners in working toward a shared vision of success. Exemplary status places Civic Memorial High School among the top 10% of schools in Illinois.

“Three years ago, when we adopted Professional Learning Communities, we made becoming an Exemplary School of Excellence a part of our school vision,” said Principal Justin Newell. “This recognition is proof that when you are ALL-In, Hard Work Pays Off!  Becoming an Exemplary School of Excellence is a testament to our commitment to excellence!”

The designation comes amid significant growth in key areas, including:

  • Consistent gains in student achievement and assessment outcomes

  • Strengthened attendance initiatives and intervention support

  • Increased access to post-secondary readiness opportunities

  • A commitment to strong 9th-grade on-track and graduation rates

“Eagle Nation is built on relationships, academics, and preparing students for their CM Next,” added Newell. “We are proud, but our journey continues for the next cohort of students. This honor is validation that we are moving forward in the right direction by creating even more opportunities for every student who walks through our doors.”

Civic Memorial High School extends its sincere appreciation to students, families, faculty, district leadership, the Board of Education, and community partners for their role in reaching this milestone.
